BlogWorld 2011 Recap

As we mentioned last week, some members of the Blogger team from Google HQ in Mountain View, Tokyo, Dublin, and Sydney (see group photo below) headed to Los Angeles to attend the 2011 BlogWorld & New Media Expo.

One of the primary reasons we attended the expo was to meet Blogger users 1:1, and to gain a better understanding of what we can do to improve the product to better meet your needs.

In addition to these discussions, we conducted surveys with many conference attendees to collect more in-depth feedback. Thank you! We really appreciate the valuable and candid responses.

In the survey results and our 1:1 discussions with you we heard a few common themes:
  • You’re hoping to widen your audience with Google+
  • You’d like more opportunities to customize and use gadgets with Dynamic Views
  • You’re looking for tips and best practices for how to make more money from your blog with AdSense
Your requests have been shared with the broader team and we’re hard at work making them happen for you. Stay tuned to the Buzz Blog in the coming weeks for follow ups, and in the meantime, check out some other photos from the expo below.

Custom domains simplified

(Cross posted on the Blogger +page)

Adding a custom domain to your blog is a great way to increase your brand identity. Setting one up, however, can sometimes be a frustrating experience, especially if you aren’t quite sure of the difference between an A-NAME and C-NAME record or where to find them.

The good news is that the folks at Go Daddy created a handy tool that simplifies the process and makes it possible to redirect your blogspot domain to a custom Go Daddy domain with the click of a button.

If you already own a Go Daddy domain and would like to connect it with your Blogger blog, head to the Go Daddy tool, log in to your Go Daddy account, enter your preferred domain or subdomain (for instance www.example.com or blog.example.com), click Confirm, and voila, your DNS records are updated.

Once your DNS records are set correctly, log in to Blogger, click “Add a custom domain” in the Publishing section of the Settings page, follow the short instructions, and your custom domain will be set up and redirecting in 24 hours or less.

If you purchased a domain from another provider, don’t worry, we’ve got a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the setup process. And finally, if you would like your blog to redirect to a custom domain, you can purchase one and get it set up without complicated configuration right from the Blogger dashboard in the Publishing section of the Settings page.

The highest converting traffic I've ever seen...

Traffic Diggers is a new site that says it guarantees more web visitors and online advertising with very little effort or cost. More importantly, it promises higher CONVERSIONS--signups and sales. So I decided to put it to the test...

My first impression was the site looks professional and clean, with an attractive look and feel. It is easy to read and understand. Joining the site was easy and painless--they do offer 2 upgrade options but they are not required to gain the benefits.

The Members Area is very well laid out and intuitive--I could figure out what to do after only a few minutes and was able to get up and running in less than 5 minutes. Inside the site, you create links and ads--the links you simply enter any URL links you use into the generator and it transforms them into "Traffic Diggers" links. You create ads for anything you want to promote using the Traffic Diggers Ad Generator, which is very easy to use. You can create as many links and as many ads as you like. And they are organized in a logical way--links are displayed in the order you create them but also your 5 most recent links appear on the main page for quick reference. Also, since the link generator is the tool you'll use most, it is also right at the top of the main page when you login. Very smart!

After you've created at least 1 link and 1 ad you can start to generate traffic. Just use and promote the new Traffic Diggers link instead of the original source link you had. Every time the Traffic Diggers link is clicked, the page loads followed by a small ad window in the lower right corner. It displays 3 ads PLUS an image with your affiliate link that goes back to Traffic Diggers. So if anyone clicks the Traffic Diggers image they see the site, and if they signup they become your referral. It's a great viral feature because you can build referrals without even trying to just by using the site.

Now every time the ad window displays (your Traffic Diggers links get clicked) you earn credits that get YOUR ad displayed in the ad windows when other members' links get clicked. So the more clicks, the more times your ads get displayed.

And this works virally--meaning as you make referrals into Traffic Diggers (either by promoting it or just using it and visitors click the Traffic Diggers image on the ad window to join) you also earn ad credits on THEIR link clicks. And this works up to 5 levels deep. So you can create a massive amount of free ad views and web traffic by referring others to Traffic Diggers also.

I didn't get to test the full effect of a big downline yet (I just got the tool) but I can tell you the rest of the site works exactly as stated--my links got clicked, I earned credits, and my ads got displayed. Traffic Diggers even tracked my results so I know how many clicks and how many ad displays. That was an impressive unadvertised extra feature.

There is one more benefit and feature which might be the best of them all--downline emailing. You can email your downline with offers, promotions, or whatever you like, and here is where Traffic Diggers really shines. They took time to make the emailing often enough that it's valuable as a user, but no so often that it's a burden to your downline. But the best part about this feature (and actually the credit earning too) is that it tells you exactly how long until you can mail again. Now THAT's cool.

Overall I have to say I am impressed with Traffic Diggers. It is simple yet powerful, and delivers on its promises. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to increase traffic and advertising.

Paid Surveys

In recent years, it has become increasing difficult for survey organizations to achieve high response rates among target populations. People may refuse to participate in surveys for any number of reasons. Some feel too busy to be bothered, while others may feel trepidation about giving personal information to strangers. To address this problem, survey organizations have begun offering incentives for participation, and evidence suggests that incentives are an extremely effective means of attaining proper response rates.

Among the many types of incentives one can offer to prospective survey respondents is cash. Although five or ten dollars can buy a lot of cooperation, one should consider carefully before plunging into the world of paid surveys.

The Paid Survey Industry

A simple Google search under the topic "paid surveys" can demonstrate the effect this method has had on the survey business. Hundreds of hits, promising potential respondent a steady income from the comfort of home, flood the screen. These paid survey sites are one of the latest incarnations of the larger "work at home" industry that promises unlimited income potential with little effort.

Although perfectly legal, paid surveys have begun to take on a veneer of fraud, as scammers vie to take advantage of desperate and unsuspecting consumers. The problem is that most of these work-at-home "opportunities" fail to bear fruit. Many paid survey companies charge fees for their services, and very often little or nothing is given in return. In recent years, the Better Business Bureau has been flooded with complaints about paid survey companies. One common practice is to charge a fee up front with promises of big money that never materializes. Respondents that do manage to get paid are generally disappointed with the return on the time invested.

American legislators are taking the problem of paid survey scams very seriously. The federal government and numerous states are currently in the process of enacting legislation to counter this kind of fraud.

Does this mean that paid surveys are entirely bad? Not necessarily. They can, in fact, be a very powerful incentive for people to respond to surveys. However, one should proceed with caution because legitimate organizations that pay people to take surveys can easily be lumped in with the scammers. Most people are savvy enough to recognize a potential swindle, and offers of big returns for small investments will raise red flags. They may become jaded against any attempts by a survey organization to pay them because they believe, with some justification, that paid surveys are the modern day equivalent of snake oil. Consequently, potential respondents may delete or ignore invitations to participate in paid surveys.

Other Potential Problems

Aside from the shady paid survey industry, other reasons exist that can lead one to question paid incentives. Although studies have shown that paying people has no serious negative effects on responses, it has been suggested that paid surveys can affect a respondent's attitude about the survey itself. For example, in one study, respondents who received a small gift for participation tended to view their participation as helpful to the surveyors, while respondents who were paid cash tended to view their participation in terms of the incentive. Moreover, payment for participation may lead to expectation of payment for future surveys. Whether these issues are enough to warrant alternative incentives is questionable, but when coupled with the already dim reputation so many paid survey companies are earning, alternate incentives may be a better choice.

Less Problematic Incentives

Survey companies use many kinds of incentives to ensure high response rates, most of which do not deal with cash payments for participation. Some survey organizations award "points" that can be saved and redeemed later for merchandise. Others enter participants in a periodic sweepstakes drawing for money or prizes. Still others offer modest gifts, such as t-shirts, coupons, coffee mugs, or other small items. All of these incentives are relatively inexpensive, but they can effectively entice respondentswithout the potential problems associated with paid surveys.
